Standard 3.3:Online and Blended Learning
Candidates develop, model, and facilitate the use of online and blended learning, digital content, and learning networks to support and extend student learning and expand opportunities and choices for professional learning for teachers and administrators.
Artifact: Online Class Syllabus
Reflection:
The syllabus was created in the spring of 2015 as a part of the Introduction to Online Learning MOOC. This course replaced ITEC 7480. During the course, we developed an online course which included the following: a syllabus and a sample module. This syllabus outlines the procedures, expectations, calendar, and policies for the online course.
As I developed this syllabus, I had to evaluate online learning strategies and resources that would be cognitively appropriate for my students. This syllabus shows how I would develop and facilitate an online course by making the expectations and assignments clear. Sharing this syllabus with my teammates and administration models how a blended and online learning environment would look in our local school building. The development of the syllabus shows how online and blended learning can enhance students' learning experiences by incorporating activities that require them to use multiple modalities as they learn.
Developing the syllabus and the online course taught me how much goes into the creation of a well-built online course. There were many details of online and blended learning classes that I had previously overlooked. I also realized the importance of making an online course that was easy to navigate and efficient for students. Without a traditional classroom setting, I spent a lot more time preparing to implement the project. During the project, more time was spent working one-on-one with the students once I was implementing the project.
This syllabus had a direct impact on the students, but it was also very beneficial for the staff. For the first time the staff had an example of what blended an online learning could look like in our school with the resources we are given. Students benefitted from the learning because they each were able to learn in their learning style. This was a huge encouragement to me because it motivates me to continue developing new resources that require students to develop 21st century learning skills.
