Artifact: Diversity Blog Post
Reflection:
The diversity blog post was created during ITEC 7430 during the spring of 2015. In this blog post, I specifically discuss the implications of diversity in the classroom when it comes to implementing technology-based lessons. In addition to simply list the tools and resources available, I also list strategies for how to implement them so they can be used to maximize success for each student.
This blog post's goal is to support teachers by providing effective strategies that allow teachers to model and facilitate digital tools and resources to support the needs of diverse students needs. Social studies, especially world social studies like I teach, is an excellent way to enhance cultural understanding and increase global awareness. These factors are built into the 7th grade Georgia Performance Standards. Teachers can increase the impact of these standards by utilizing digital resources that show what life is like for students in these diverse settings. Currently, I am at a school where I have students from the majority of the regions I teach about. I can engage the class by allowing the students to present something about their culture. However, differentiation for these learners also requires modeling and facilitating the use of digital tools to explain directions and procedures. Diverse learners need teachers to model for them to clarify any instructions that might not be clear because of a language or cultural barrier.
This artifact required me to think from the perspective of my students, which is always refreshing. As I was researching in preparation for this blog post, I found many practical resources that could easily be utilized to support diverse learners in my room. Completing this blog post opened my eyes to how many resources are readily available to assist teachers in differentiation.
This artifact is beneficial for teachers. However, it is crucial for students of diverse backgrounds. It is essential that these students receive the support they need to be on the same playing field as their peers. When a teacher can effectively utilize and implement resources with these students, they are helping them reach their full potential.
