Artifact: Annotated Bibliography
Reflection:
ITEC 7470 was a very challenging class for me. Educational research contained the most new information out of all the courses in the Instructional Technology program. The Annotated Bibliography was part of the preparation for implementing the capstone. Throughout this project, I located ten articles pertaining to my capstone- a MOOC in middle school. Since there was not anything peer-reviewed and credible on the subject, my Literature Review consisted of a blend of information including the following: blended learning, MOOCs, and middle school students and technology.
This artifact shows my ability to continually grow in the field of current and emerging technologies. Looking at the available research proved to be very thought provoking as I started to begin to design and detail my capstone project. By evaluating and analyzing similar research studies, I was able to apply the knowledge and skills I had learned in the ITEC program and use the successful strategies from the researchers. When I was creating my project, it was incredibly helpful to have the annotated bibliography on hand. I referred to it often, as I was creating and implementing my capstone. Having a concise project at my side ensured that I maximized my personal productivity and professional practices. Now, before I begin a new project or strategy in my classroom, I look at the available research to learn what is successful and what is not. This helps me learn from other's successes and failures. By looking at the research, I am able to learn about strategies and tools that I would not have thought of on my own.
I would like to continue to follow the progress of MOOCs as they begin to make an impact on K-12 education. Unfortunately, since this was still considered an emerging technology, there were not many studies done, especially in a middle school setting. In the future, I would like to continue my research on this as I expand and adapt my MOOC to fit a broader audience.
This annotated bibliography had the largest impact on my professional practice. Knowing what research was out there and what had been proven by empirical research made me feel more comfortable as I was embarking on this new project. Of course, since this had a significant impact on the tools I was using professionally, it also had a resounding impact that reached my colleagues and my students.
