Assessment
Artifact: Data Inventory
This artifact was created during the summer of 2015 for ITEC 7305. This Data Inventory required me to collect data and discuss how our school could use to drive instruction. I also described how our school could fulfill its vision by using the data properly. In order to do this, I had to gather the data and synthesize it.
The data I used to compile the data inventory included end of grade summative assessments. Additionally, it includes data about the demographics of our school in relation to their performance. In order to have an effective data team, the members must have effective data presentations modeled for them and must have relevant, beneficial conversation facilitated during meetings. The data inventory provides those talking points and models specific roles for each member of the school. It is essential that the data team are experts at modeling and facilitating the effective use of diagnostic, formative, and summative assessments, so the entire school can follow their example. Following this format, each grade level content area team will have an expert on their team and each person on staff can play an important part on the data team. In modern schools, each thing we implement is driven by the data we are collecting. It is imperative that each teacher in the building knows how to collect data in order to measure student learning and technology literacy. The data inventory not only covers how to do these things, but it also provides strategies for engaging and motivating stakeholders.
The entire data course taught me so much about not just collecting data, but where to go from there. This artifact would be better if it were done after the GA Milestone assessments were received and included the most current data on students. It would also be beneficial to have these intimate conversations about the data with the entire grade-level (or pods) to compare students' performance across all content areas. When this is done, teachers can really dig deep into the data to enhance their teaching experience and the students learning experience.
The data inventory had a direct impact on teachers and administration, but it also has an indirect impact on students. The more teachers know about their students, the better they can differentiate. Data is a very powerful tool in the field of education when used properly. After completing this assignment, I was able to address key points at the beginning of the school year with my colleagues. From that point, we were able to put strategies that would give our accelerated learners the independence they crave and our struggling the remediation they need to thrive.
